A great sportsman and tireless entrepreneur who without a doubt gave himself up completely when helping victims of the earthquake. A person who did not wait to receive anything in return. Chile has lost a great man, but he has left us an important legacy, such as Desafio Levantemos Chile (Raise Up Chile Challenge) and valuable letters with very wise words such as: “Never, never give up on your dreams, follow them with great passion and if you do not accomplish your dream, it does not matter, just wandering down that path will have been worthwhile living and hopefully the dream that you follow will be the impossible dream”. We invite you to feel thrilled with this part of the Chilean Patagonia….wild Tierra del Fuego! Tierra del Fuego beholds a notable, mystical and marvelous beauty…..open plains, ancient forests, valleys, oceans, lakes, rivers, glaciers, mountains and a grand variety of flora and fauna make it a lovely place to visit. Traveling through these places, where you will only hear the sound of the wind and birds will make you feel revitalized and with renewed energy. In the beginning, this place was named Tierra de los Fuegos (Land of Fires) because of the lights that you would see from its banks, which were bonfires, lit by its former inhabitants, the Selknam or Onas. Carlos V, the King of Spain, would later change this name, to Tierra del Fuego. Large peat bogs of different colors, along with noble wild grasses that delicately cover the ground, its variable climate at times, makes one live through the four seasons of the year in only just one day…these climatic changes amaze visitors….living through these types of feelings are experienced only a few times in life. The IST presented its system of accreditation for standing Committees of Health and Safety. The official launching ceremony of System of Accreditation for Standing Committees of Health and Safety for member companies, took place in Viña del Mar. This system designed for the IST (Health & Security Labor Institute) for committees who achieve levels of excellence in their preventive management. The presentation of this system took place in the morning during breakfast with representatives of member companies at the Naval Club located in Las Salinas, with an attendance record of over a 100 people. During the welcoming ceremony, the President of the Central Northern Region, Mr. Richard Hughes, emphasized the role of Standing Committees of Health and Safety as a fundamental agent in the prevention of accidents at work and professional illnesses. By emphasizing that, the accreditation system responds to demanding scenarios that the market imposes on and the requirements of the presidential advisory commission in order to reinforce the relationship and management of these committees within companies. The assistants then listened to Ignisterra’s experience, by being the first company to be accredited as a Standing Committee for Health and Safety under the IST system. This case was presented by Juan Maldonado, Committee President at Ignisterra S.A.; Jaime Gomez, Vice President of Operations at Ignisterra; and Mauricio Villarroel, IST, Viña del Mar, Prevention Consultant, providing details of the accreditation system. The system designed by IST searches the systematization of activities of working committees in compliance with fundamental legal aspects, its operative and administrative performance, applying good tactics extracted from labor experiences at the Health & Security Labor Institute with these committees. |

First-time accreditation of an Advisory Committee for Safety, Hygiene and Heath Protection at work. With the certification of the advisory committee at Ignisterra, the Institute of Health for Employees (IST) initiated an accreditation plan for Safety, Hygiene and Health committees at companies on a nationwide level. The certification was handed over at a solemn ceremony, which took place at the Institute of Health for Employees in Quilpue. This constitutes a culmination of work that initiated in April, when Ignisterra signed a commitment to undertake a training skills program under the concept of good practices and designing a work program, which was later audited, this being a requisite for the accreditation. The company’s Operations Manager, Mr. Jaime Gomez, indicated that the Advisory Committees accreditation constitutes a new stage in the company’s preventive work process, which has created many challenges within this area. Raul Rojas, Preventive Operations Manager at the Institute of Health for Employees, emphasized that the accreditation process initiated by the IHE anticipates one of the recommendations made by the presidential commission on labor safety, which raised the need of strengthening the role of committees and their performance: “There are around 15 thousand Advisory Committees for Safety, Hygiene and Health in the country, but it is necessary that they operate so they are able to contribute to the creation of a preventive culture. The experience of the committee at Ignisterra makes them a pioneer and will be replicated by other committees from member companies; this way there will be thousands of workers occupied with safety and health at work”. At the certification ceremony we counted on the participation of Ignisterra’s Operations Manager, Jaime Gomez and of it’s Advisory Committee for Safety, Hygiene and Health, headed by, Juan Maldonado, and the committees members, Claudia Castillo, Mauricio Zamorano and Marco Valenzuela. Pamela Reyes, the company’s Prevention Specialist and Mauricio Villarroel, IHE Consultant, who provided the company with the idea. IHE assistants at the ceremony, Mr. Richard Hughes, Preventive Operations Manager, Julio Loo, Assistant Preventive Operations Manager for the Northern and Central Regions and Julio Gonzalez, Quilpue’s Regional Supervisor. Ignisterra is an industry that elaborates furniture components and doors made of noble wood that is only grown in the southern part of the country, these products are mainly exported. |

Our company’s Advisory Committee on Safety, Hygiene and Health Protection has assumed the challenge of entering a system of accreditation for all Committees nationwide; this system has been provided by the Institute of Job Security and it is the only system of accreditation that exists in the country.
To verify the committee’s performance it shall be subject to an auditing program, which will be carried out by the Institute of Job Security. Once the Advisory Committee of Safety, Hygiene and Health Protection fulfill a series of requirements by the end of this process, they will be presented with the "Good Practices for Advisory Committees of the Institute of Job Security", for a period of a year. However, the requirements should point towards an efficient performance by the ACSHP and it must be focused along the line of Occupational Health Services and Safety. This may be renovated depending on the maintenance of the auditing system. |

Ignisterra Activities: Ignisterra´s personnel participated in an outdoor training skills program that took place at the beautiful Botanical Gardens located in Viña del Mar on Friday March 12th , there was much enthusiasm. The activities main objective was to consolidate even more so our employees internal relations, strengthening the interdependence that exists between the different areas of the company and improving communication skills. There were motivational sessions and we reflected on the different themes related to the continuous improvement of interpersonal relations, achieving the empowerment of different work teams. To achieve this objective, Legado’s, the company who was responsible for the training, developed a series of activities and competitions oriented towards the constant improvement of our work teams, achieving improvements in the company’s daily tasks. Once the day was over and logically with everyone’s exhaustion due to the activities that took place, we ended the day with a pleasant barbecue with the entire family at Ignisterra. We completely believe that the effort realized was worth it, by getting to know our fellow co-workers better, favoring our internal communication and showing the importance that each one of us has in the company, we play a fundamental role. Without a doubt, the results of these activities allow us to improve our daily actions, by permitting us to provide our clients better products and services. Earthquake in Chile: We thank the multiple emails from all over the world that have shown so much support and concern due to the huge earthquake and tsunami that has affected an extensive area of Chile. We greatly regret the natural disaster that our country has suffered, which has caused hundreds of deaths and material loses. We would like to inform all our clients and friends that our employees are well and have not suffered any loses due to the earthquake. Chile is a country that has periodically suffered from this type of natural disaster and in turn has created our spirit of hard work and self-improvement. We would also like to inform that our sawmills are not found within the affected area due to the earthquake. However, our manufacturing plant and main office is found within the affected area, but has resisted with no major problems and it is currently operating under normal conditions only after a couple hours of minor repairs. Nevertheless, we regret to inform that this may generate a few delays in the shipments of our orders because there are many problems with highways that transport the lumber from the sawmills and on the other hand the seaports of San Antonio and Valparaiso are not functioning in a normal manner. We will be confirming shipments once we are provided with in-depth information from the corresponding shipping lines. |

In Southeast Asia: Ignisterra promotes certified wood:
The Comercial Manager of the company, Gianni Vercellino, anticipates that sales will recover by 2010. Quite agitated were the last weeks of 2009 for Gianni Vercellino. The Ignisterra Commercial Manager, who was in China (Guangzhou, Ningbo and Shanghai) visiting clients, and then moved to Southeast Asia, where he participated as a speaker at five workshops that addressed the issue of sustainable forest certification. The participation in this series of meetings by our representative of the company, which owns 20 hectares of lenga in XII Region and was FSC certified (Forest Stewardship Council) in May last year, was organized by APP Timber , Ignisterra's agent in this region of planet. These seminars arose due to the interest of local manufacturers of furniture and components, in order to learn more about the development of certified wood. "The objective was to introduce ourselves as a company that offers a good alternative of FSC certified hardwood," says Gianni Vercellino, who comments that in this region "the demand for certified wood is becoming increasingly important," since the end customers in Europe and the U.S., mainly, are demanding sustainable products and internationally recognized. A total of 250 people attended the seminars, conducted in Indonesia (Semarang, Surabaya and Jakarta), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and Thailand (Bangkok). Along with our exhibitor, there were participants from a Brazilian and Uruguayan company, which also market certified wood. Market Recovery We are quite optimistic. After a year that it was very difficult for Chilean forestry companies in general, there is a perception that a recovery period is coming. "We are hopeful that sales will recover. Now we are seeing sales recover in Asia and Southeast Asia, and also in the United States, although a little slower. We expect the second half will see a significant recovery of volumes and prices in general, including in Europe, "said Vercellino, who also said that prices of hardwood, similar to Lenga, are improving, in a range that varies between 5% and 10%: "We have noticed that prices are catching up, in some grades and thicknesses more than in other" details. In 2009, Ignisterra sold $ 8 million. By 2010, we hope to reach U.S. $ 10 million in sales, returning to the levels before the crisis, and expect to incorporate some new machinery in production lines, which will extend the product offering. |
